Pitti Uomo 83 – Gentle Earth Fall/Winter 2013
Here is an interesting scarf company from Germany, Gentle Earth. This accessory label prints satellite images of the earth onto sheer cashmere and wool scarfs. The images include many natural structures as well as aerial views of man made ones (cities). One of my favorites is the green circular scarf which is an aerial photograph of the Saudi Arabian irrigation fields. The collection includes images of Las Vegas, the Prismatic Lake in Yellowstone Park and the Brandberg Mountains. The coordinates are also printed onto the scarf and you can use Google Earth to pinpoint what is being illustrated.

Paris Fashion Week – Balmain Fall/Winter 2013
This season, Balmain incorporated a Japanese/Chinese theme into the their signature silhouette. There were a number of Kimono like pieces including a purple down filled noragi and a bedazzled kimono jacket belted in the center. Not only did they create Asian themed clothing but also took classic suiting and added embroidered Chinese dragons on the lapels and belted the middle to embody a traditional kimono. Many of the pieces I have featured are not very prominent in the lookbook and are some of the more exponential items of the collection. The super distressed denim motorcycle jeans, green asymmetrical hooded jacket, and the short gray shearling coat are some of my favorite pieces and can see them doing very well with retailers around the world. I was also intrigued with Balmain’s take on the down blazer. Instead of opting for the usual blue, gray or black they created a teal colored quilted blazer made out of lighter-weight down and cotton. This piece is perfect for the early Fall or Spring. Overall, it was a great Balmain collection and I admire the Eastern Asian infusion.

Milan Fashion Week – Dolce & Gabbana Fall/Winter 2013
Many of the pieces this season were typical Dolce & Gabbana and featured a lot of lavish embellishments. Personally, I would never wear the jewel bedazzled Jesus shirt but you can see the amount of handwork and time that went into it; The jewels and settings were all hand-sewn to a silk blouse. My personal highlight of the collection were the tailored pieces. I have never seen anyone needlepoint embroider a wool chalkstipe flannel blazer with flowers or hand sew lace all over a velvet jacket. These applications take colossal amounts of time and it is nice to see that Dolce & Gabbana stayed true to their roots while incorporating their signature style into more traditional pieces. Honestly, it is one of the more interesting collections I have seen this season and would find a way to wear one of their floral needlepoint jackets without looking too crazy.
